We all get stressed–from being overworked, or from our thousands of responsibilities–but it’s not news to us that exercise can be an outlet to overcome that. The added layer to this is working out with others can help improve perceived stress levels and overall well-being. (Not to mention, you get to say you have quite the fittest of friends!)
A new study from the American Osteopathic Association found that medical students who participated in group fitness classes at least once a week, over 12 weeks, had improved physical, mental and emotional well-being. Compared to peers who did not work out at all, or worked out alone, participants who worked out together saw improvements in their emotional state by 26%, mental by 12%, and physical state by 24.8%. Those who worked out alone saw an improvement in their mental state by 11%, but no other changes otherwise. It might be worth a shot to ditch the headphones and start getting to know the people you workout with! Shared goals, a common mindset and work ethic and a positive environment are just a few positive aspects of group fitness classes that could be contributors to these improvements.
What makes CrossFit classes unique from a group fitness class at the local globo gym is that you truly start to develop camaraderie with those you workout with. Your group and your coach hold you accountable, and will encourage you throughout the process, no matter what your goal is. Athletes share with us all the time that they’ve made some lifelong friends by attending CrossFit classes together each week–and you can see it when you walk through our doors.
