We all have our goals: whether they be fitness-related or our own personal goals, but how is it that there are so many obstacles that we face that keep us from achieving them? Maybe it’s hard for us to even get started. But why?
Be aware. Here are the TOP 3 GOAL killers:
Perfectionism. This one might be the most unidentifiable quality on the surface; no wants to admit that they “strive to be perfect”. There is a chance that perfectionism is the quality that keeps us from getting started on the first step or action on a goal. If I can’t do it well, I won’t do it at all. The reality is: making mistakes helps allows us to learn how to improve and continue propelling forward. Look back at your action plan, then ditch the perfectionist attitude and get started on step 1.
Negativity. It’s inevitable at times of frustration or setbacks to feel negative emotions. It’s also highly contagious! However, if we dwell on the negatives, and fail to highlight the successes, we may be blindsided by this “can’t-do” mentality. Next to perfectionism, negativity will hold you back on moving onward and upward. Try this: for every negative outcome or emotion, try to highlight two successes within the same realm. For example: if I am feeling down about missing a Snatch PR, I can recall: 1) I am finally able to drop straight into a squat! 2) I have no experience in weightlifting, yet I am able to repeat several snatches in daily workouts at a weight that challenges me.
Closing yourself off. While the whole world doesn’t necessarily need to play a part in our personal goals, reaching out for help or guidance can be your best choice when we get stuck along the way. You shouldn’t feel like you can’t seek people out who can help you! While you should branch out to ask for assistance, be mindful of the resources you utilize. With a plethora of “experts” out there, on social media, on blogs, etc., do your research and open yourself up to people you find trust and value in.
