Having a winner’s mindset is something that happens inside of you when you truly want to succeed. It consumes you and can put blinders on you from a lot of other things in the world that will try to sway you in the wrong direction. A winner is someone who does not care about the extraneous things and can stay proudly focused on the goal at hand. This is often seen as crazy or taboo, but it is a unique state of mind. Having your whole life dedicated towards a goal is one of the most positive things that you can do, as long as the goal is a healthy and positive one for you and those around you.

When you find this passion to “win,” it tends to block out the negativity around you, and the people in your life who may have been holding you back are going to slowly distance themselves from you, potentially for the better. For us in the CrossFit world, one of our passions ends up usually being fitness or health-related; sometimes it becomes such a strong passion that we want to be the best.

In order to attain the highest levels of fitness, especially as a competitor, you have to be truly dedicated to the process of being a fine-tuned and well-oiled machine. That’s not to say you can’t live life and have to be an anti-social or shut in, but your priorities in life will need to shift.

This shifting of priorities is not a sacrifice to a winner though, it is a conscious effort to try and be the best athlete possible. A winner doesn’t see the “loss” in skipping out on late nights out with friends; there isn’t anything about that event that’s going to improve performance. Winners tend to have the discipline to set themselves down to bed at the same time every day, and can wake up every day to work out because it’s just what you do; it’s not just another item on the to-do list. Weighing and measuring food becomes fun, sort of like a game because you challenge yourself to know exactly what’s going into your body and isn’t “a waste of time” or “inconvenient.”

These things are abstract to most people, but so is attempting to be the fittest person you can be. Having the mental toughness to be able to block out the noise of the world that wants you to be unhealthy in so many different ways is a challenging thing to attain but always having the mentality of “is this helping me reaching my goals?” goes a long way. 9 times out of 10, we know the answer to that question, but it’s how we act on that thought that separates a person from those who strive to reach their goals and those that do. Next time you get upset about something that you tried and may have failed, think about if you truly are doing everything in your power to achieve it. A winner knows that answer.
